Rename a Folder using a Windows Hotkey

11 of 13

You may want to rename a folder or file to accurately reflect its contents. Locate the folder or file you want to rename. I’ve navigated to a folder I created in Documents called Practice Files. I’ll rename it to Practice.

  1. Press F2 to execute the Rename command.
  2. If you are renaming a folder, the entire folder name is selected. If you are renaming a file, the name of the file is selected but the file extension, if visible, is not selected. Type a new name, or edit the existing one as you would in an edit box or document. I’ll navigate to the end of this file name and press BACKSPACE to remove the word "Files."
  3. Press ENTER to save the new name and exit edit mode. Focus will return to your folders and files list.
  4. The folder has been renamed successfully.
