(Narrator) Using a Language to Pronounce a Word

In this lesson use the word "lagniappe" and have it pronounced in French. Lagniappe is a Cajun French word which means "something given as a bonus or small gift."

1. I have WordPad open. Type a sentence with the word lagniappe in it and notice how the Eloquence synthesizer pronounces it. I already have a sentence typed, "When you get a free donut with the purchase of a dozen donuts, that is considered lagniappe." The Eloquence synthesizer pronounces it something like "lig nee app."

2. Press INSERT+D from within WordPad to open Dictionary manager. The title bar of Dictionary manager should read WordPad.jdf.

(JAWS) Press control plus shift plus d to modify the default dictionary file. Otherwise changes will effect only the current application. Add... Button.

3. (N) Press ENTER to activate the Add button. The Add Dictionary Definition dialog box opens. Focus is in the Actual Word edit box.

4. (N) If necessary, type the word lagniappe in the Actual Word edit box and also in the Replacement Word edit box.

5. (N) Press TAB to move to the Language combo box, and then choose English from the list.

6. (N) Press TAB to move to the Synthesizer combo box and choose Eloquence Software from the list.

7. (N) Press TAB to move to the Voice combo box and make sure that it reads All Voices.

8. (N) Press TAB to move to the Speak Replacement Word using Language combo box, and then choose French from the list.

9. (N) Press ENTER to close the Dictionary Definition dialog box. Focus returns to the Dictionary manager dialog box.

10. (N) Press ALT+F4 to close Dictionary manager and answer, "Yes," to save the changes.

11. Try reading the sentence again and notice that for the word "lagniappe" the Eloquence synthesizer switches to French and pronounces it much better.
