(Narrator) Abbreviations and Phrases

In this exercise take a phrase such as the following one and create a dictionary rule that makes the synthesizer pronounce it as an initialism, pronounced as three separate letters:

United States of America
(USA)

Then, take an initialism such as the following one and create a dictionary rule that speaks the four complete words it represents:

USPS
(United States Postal Service)

  1. First, open WordPad if you do not already have it open from the previous lesson.
  2. Start Dictionary manager by pressing INSERT+D.

(JAWS) Press control plus shift plus d to modify the default dictionary file. Otherwise changes will effect only the current application. Add... Button.

3. (N) Note the message JAWS just spoke. The changes you make in this lesson only apply to WordPad, and no other apps. The title bar of Dictionary manager reads WordPad.jdf. Press ENTER to activate the Add button. The Add Dictionary Definition dialog box opens.

(J) Add Dictionary Definition dialog, actual word: Edit.

4. (N) Focus is in the Actual Word edit box. In the Actual Word edit box type the phrase United States of America, and then press TAB to move to the Replacement Word edit box.

(J) U n i t e d S t a t e s o f A m e r i c a, Replacement word, edit.

5. (N) In the Replacement Word edit box type USA, using all caps and no spaces, and then press ENTER to close the Add Dictionary Definition dialog box.

(J) U S A, Enter, Add… button.

6. (N) Press ALT+F4 to close the WordPad.jdf file, and answer, "Yes," to saving the changes.

(J) Alt+F4, Dictionary Manager dialog, Save changes to wordpad.jdf? Yes button, Enter, Document - Wordpad.

7. (N) Test the new rule by reading the text now in WordPad.

(J) USA

8. (N) Next, repeat the process, but create a rule to speak the words instead of the abbreviation for USPS. I will press INSERT+D.

(J) Add… button

9. (N) ENTER

(J) Add dictionary Definition dialog, Actual Word, edit, United

10. (N) USPS, all caps

(J) U S P S

11. (N) TAB to the Replacement Word edit field.

(J) Replacement Word, edit

12. (N) And type out the full words.

(J) U n i t e d S t a t e s P o s t a l S e r v i c e

13. (N) ENTER to activate the OK button.

(J) Enter, Add… button

14. (N) And ALT+F4 and answer "Yes" to saving the changes.

(J) Alt+F4, Dictionary Manager dialog, Save changes to WordPad.jdf? Yes button. ENTER, edit, Document - WordPad.

15. (N) I will press DOWN ARROW.

(J) United States Postal Service

16. (N) And UP ARROW.

(J) USA
