(Narrator) The Braille Settings in the JAWS Startup Wizard

Use the JAWS Startup Wizard to make quick changes to braille settings.

  1. Switch to the JAWS window and open the Help menu.

(JAWS) JAWS Professional, Help menu, Commands Search.

  1. (N) Choose Startup Wizard in the Help menu.

(N) The Startup Wizard opens.

  1. Press ENTER until you come to the Braille Translation Settings page of the Startup Wizard.

(J) JAWS Speech Settings page, Run JAWS Settings page, Common Options page, Verbosity Settings page, Braille Translation Settings page.

(N) Focus is in the Language combo box. Choose your language preference if it is not already set here.

  1. Press TAB to move to the next control, the Output combo box.

(J) Output Combo box, U.S. English Grade 2, 3 of 5.

(N) The choices available in the Output combo box include the following:

  1. Select a Braille output mode from the list. The first option is always Computer Braille. The other available options depend on the currently selected language.
  2. Press TAB to move to the next control, the Input combo box.

(J) Input combo box, Computer Braille, 1 of 2.

(N) The choices available in the Input combo box include the following:

Select a Braille input mode from the list. The first option is always Computer Braille. The other available option depends on the currently selected output mode. The default input mode is Computer Braille. This setting is not available if the selected output mode is Computer Braille, or the selected output mode does not support input.

  1. Press TAB to move to the next control.

(J) Show current word in Computer Braille check box checked.

(N) The Show Current Word in computer braille check box is not checked by default. Select this check box to have the word at the current cursor position display in computer braille. Clear this check box to display the word in contracted braille. The Show current word in Computer Braille check box is available only when the output mode is Grade 1 or Grade 2 and the input mode is Computer Braille.

  1. After making your choices on the Braille Translation Settings page, press ENTER to activate the Next button and move to the next page, the Braille Settings page.

(J) Braille Settings, Braille Mode combo box, Structured, 2 of 3.

(N) Focus is in the Braille Mode combo box. By default it is set to Structured mode. The choices available in the Braille Mode combo box include:

Use this option to control the format of the information sent to the braille display. When Line mode is selected, JAWS sends the line of text at the current cursor position to the braille display. When Structured mode is selected, JAWS sends information to the display that is relevant to the current cursor position. The information sent includes things such as control type, dialog name, or number of items in a list. When Speech Output mode is selected, JAWS sends the same text to the display that it sends to the synthesizer. The default setting for this option is Structured.

  1. Press the TAB key to move to the next control, Enable Flash Messages.

(J) Enable Flash Messages, check box checked.

(N) Braille Flash Messages are short announcements that appear on your braille display for only a few seconds. These messages can include errors, status information, help balloons and other information.

  1. Press the TAB key to move to the next control, Reverse Panning Buttons.

(J) Reverse Panning Buttons check box not checked

(N) Select this check box to switch the direction of left and right panning buttons on a braille display. This means that when you press a left Navrow or panning button, panning advances to the right. Likewise, when you press a right Navrow or panning button, panning advances to the left. This check box is cleared by default.

  1. Press the TAB key to move to the next control, Enable Word Wrap.

(J) Enable Word Wrap check box checked

(N) If you select this check box, JAWS does not split a word that is too large to be shown on the braille display. When you pan to the next increment, you can read the word in its entirety. If you clear this check box, JAWS displays as much of the word as possible, but a portion may be cut off. JAWS shows the remainder of the word when you pan to the next increment. This check box is selected by default.

The next two controls are not available on my computer, since I do not currently have a refreshable braille display attached. When a display is attached, the controls that are available here include the following:

  1. Press ENTER to activate the Finish button and close the JAWS Startup Wizard when you are finished making any desired changes.

(N) You can also adjust braille options by using Settings Center, INSERT+F2.
