(Narrator) Reading Tables with JAWS

Tables are used to organize information on a web page. I'm here on the Surf's Up home page. I will press INSERT+F7 to bring up a list of links so I can find the Tables page.

(JAWS) Links list dialog, links list view, skip to navigation one of 26.

(N) I'll press the letter T to navigate there quickly.

(J) T, Temporary versus permanent changes, 5 of 26. T, Tables, 7 of 26.

(N) And press ENTER to activate this link.

(J) Enter, Tables with JAWS – Google Chrome Tables with JAWS page has two regions, navigation.

(N) Now I'm on a page that contains tables. JAWS announces when you enter and leave a table. You can use T, tango, to move quickly between tables.

(J) Table with seven columns and five rows, table with six columns and five rows.

(N) If you want to list the tables on a page press INSERT+CTRL+T, tango. I'll do that now.

(J) Select a table dialog, list one list view, TV listings with only column headers 6x5, 2 of eight.

(N) You can navigate through this list, using your UP and DOWN ARROW keys. I'll move up to the first table.

(J) TV listings with both column and row headers 7x5.

(N) I'll press ENTER to move to that table.

(J) Enter, table with seven columns and five rows.

(N) Once you enter a table you can use table reading commands to move through and read information. Hold down CTRL and ALT then use your ARROW keys to navigate. I'm holding down CTRL and ALT and I'll press RIGHT ARROW to navigate to the right one column.

(J) 8 PM, column two, 8:30 PM, column three.

(N) I'm still holding down CTRL and CTRL and I'll, press LEFT ARROW to move by column in the other direction.

(J) 8 PM, column two, blank column one.

(N) I can navigate through rows in the same manner by holding down CTRL and ALT and pressing UP ARROW.

(J) Top of column

(N) Or DOWN ARROW.

(J) ABC row two, CBS row three.

(N) Table layer keystrokes offer a fast and convenient way to navigate through tables. The table layer eliminates the need to hold down several keys at once to perform a table navigation command when in a table. Press INSERT+SPACEBAR followed by the letter T, tango, to activate the table layer.

(J) Space [pop sound], T, table layer.

(N) I'll show you a few of the layered commands. You can press the letter H, hotel, or the QUESTION MARK to list the keystrokes available for use in the table layer. I'll press RIGHT ARROW to move to the right one column at a time.

(J) 8 PM The Big Bang Theory, column two, 8:30 PM, Mom.

(N) Now I'll press LEFT ARROW to move to the left.

(J) 8 PM The Big Bang Theory column two, CBS column one.

(N) Similarly, I can press UP ARROW to move up a row.

(J) ABC row two

(N) Or DOWN ARROW to move down a row.

(J) CBS Row three.

(N) Pressing HOME will move me to the beginning of the current row.

(J) Beginning of row, CBS.

(N) I can press END to move to the end of the row.

(J) End of row, Parenthood, spans two columns

(N) CTRL+HOME will move me to the first cell in the table.

(J) Blank column 1.

(N) And CTRL+END moves me to the last cell.

(J) Parenthood, spans two columns, column 6, row 5.

(N) Press CTRL+UP ARROW to move to the top of the current column.

(J) Top of column, 10 PM

(N) And CTRL+DOWN ARROW to move to the bottom.

(J) Bottom of column, Parenthood spans two columns

(N) I'll press CTRL+LEFT ARROW to move to the beginning of the current row.

(J) Beginning of row, NBC.

(N) And CTRL+RIGHT ARROW to move to the end.

(J) End of row, Parenthood, spans two columns.

(N) Press ESC to exit the table layer. [chime sound] Navigating away from the table will exit this layer as well. This has been a demonstration on reading tables with JAWS.
