JAWS Commands Search

(Narrator:) JAWS Commands Search. If you use your computer with your keyboard then you definitely know what I mean when I say sometimes there's that one command you can't quite remember. We have made it possible for you to quickly search for a command...with JAWS Commands Search. JAWS Commands Search is perfect for that rarely used or hard to remember command. JAWS Commands Search allows you to enter a full or partial description of the command that you don't remember the keystroke for. There are several ways to open Commands Search while JAWS is running. It can be found in the JAWS menus, of course, under Help. Or in my favorite way, via a layered command. Sound unfamiliar? A layered command is just a series of simple commands that perform an action within JAWS. The first layer is always INSERT+SPACEBAR. Again that's hold down the INSERT and tap the SPACEBAR.

(JAWS:) Space. [pop sound]

(N:) You'll hear the distinctive sound. Then you're ready for the next layer of your command, which in the case of JAWS Commands Search is J, Juliet. That's the entire layered command for Commands Search within JAWS. INSERT+SPACE.

(J:) Space. [pop sound]

(N:) Then J, Juliet.

(J:) Search for JAWS commands dialog. Search for: edit.

(N:) Before we get into the details let me remind you that JAWS Commands Search is also context sensitive. If you're wanting specific commands for browsing the web put your focus in your web browser before you start Commands Search. Try Commands Search in Microsoft Word or in Microsoft Excel. Commands Search is great for Excel. Very useful in lots of contexts. Back to the search itself. Something all users will do from time to time is change the JAWS speech rate. In other words how fast it talks. Did you know you could do this on the fly without ever going back to the JAWS menus. I know the function of the command I'm looking for is to change the JAWS speech rate.

(J:) R. A. Increased voice Rate Permanent.

(N:) As you just heard, while I'm typing the first result is spoken. I can press ENTER on this first result or arrow down to view other results.

(J:) Down. Link. Increase Voice Rate Permanent. Windows+Alt+Ctrl+PageUp.

(N:) JAWS Commands Search has told us exactly what we wanted to know. To permanently change the JAWS speech rate on-the-fly, you'll use the command WINDOWS Key+ALT+CTRL and then PGUP up to increase and PGDN to decrease. Search it up on Commands Search yourself. It is so convenient to find which commands are available using JAWS Commands Search. To hear which other layered commands might be available try INSERT+SPACE.

(J:) Space. [pop sound]

(N:) Followed by the QUESTION MARK.

(J:) Heading level two general commands.

(N:) And be sure to check out our other tutorials specifically on layered commands.
