If you have FSReader open from the last topic, you’re ready to go. I don’t have it open, so I’ll go ahead and open it now:

To open FSReader, switch to the JAWS window by pressing INSERT+J. I’m running JAWS from the system tray so a context menu will open instead.

(N) Next, press ALT and the letter H to go to the Help menu. My JAWS is set to start from the system tray, so I’ll just press H by itself.

(N) Find and press ENTER on Training in the Help menu. Again, since mine is running from the system tray I’ll press the letter T.

(N) FSReader opens to the JAWS Table of Contents. NOTE: If the Table of Contents is not available in your version of FSReader, just press F1 to open the DAISY book built-in help to use as you participate in this practice. Press ALT+SPACEBAR followed by X to maximize FSReader.

(N) The search function allows you to quickly find a specific word or phrase in text content. For example, type the word “file” to find all instances of that word or other words that contain those letters. Space before the f and after the e to find all occurrences of just the word “file.” I’ll demonstrate how this works. I’ll navigate to the top of the Table of Contents by pressing CTRL+HOME.

(N) I’ll press CTRL+F to activate the find command.

(N) Then I’ll type the word file without a space before or after.

(N) And I’ll press ENTER.

(N) If the text is found, focus will move to the first instance of that word or phrase which it did. If the text isn’t found, you’ll receive a message that your search string is not found. JAWS found a phrase containing the word profile which includes the letters f I l e. I’ll select the text to visually indicate where focus is on the screen by pressing CTRL+SHIFT+RIGHT ARROW.

(N) This selected the part of the text that included those letters. Now, I’ll press RIGHT ARROW to deselect it.

(N) I’ll press CTRL+HOME to navigate to the top and try this again, this time with a space before and after the word file.

(N) Now the results only contain the word “file” I’ll press CTRL+SHIFT+RIGHT ARROW to select the text and visually indicate where focus is on the screen.

(N) Press F3 to navigate to the next instance of your search.

(N) You can also search for an entire phrase. I’ll press CTRL+HOME to navigate to the top of the Table of Contents again, then press CTRL+F to activate the find command.

(N) I want to know the total listening time for each training book. So I’ll type the phrase “total time,” and press ENTER.

(N) I’ll press CTRL+RIGHT ARROW to select the text and visually show where focus is on the screen.

(N) Now I’ll press F3 to navigate through each instance of this phrase.

(J) In Windows the total time to listen to Book 2 is 34 minutes 40 seconds JAWS Tandem JAWS screen shade braille viewer convenient OCR PictureSmart etc. in this book the total time to listen to the Book 4 is 37 minutes 15 seconds.

(N) Finally, let’s explore other items in the Find dialog box. I’ll press CTRL+F.

(N) Here we have the search edit box. I’ll press TAB to move through the other items.

(J) Context-specific history check box checked

(N) Context-specific history controls whether the find history is context-specific for the current site or application. For example, when you are on a website, checking this box will show your history for that site only.

(J) Maintain history of recent finds checkbox checked

(N) Check the maintain history of recent finds box to retain a history of the last 20 recently found items.

(J) Direction forward radio button checked

(N) You can choose to search forward or backward from the cursor location using the direction forward or direction reverse radio button. Press UP or DOWN ARROW to cycle between these 2 choices. I’ll press DOWN ARROW.

(J) Ignore Case checkbox checked

(N) Use the Ignore Case check box to ignore or specify the case of your search. For instance, if the word or phrase you were searching for contains capital letters, you can choose not to ignore case so the results will match exactly what you type.

(J) Find button

(N) We also have the Find button.

(J) Delete button

(N) The delete button.

(J) Clear History button

(N) The Clear Find History button.

(J) Cancel button

(N) And the cancel button. Press INSERT+F1 for context-specific JAWS help on any of these controls. I’ll demonstrate on a couple of these. I’ll start with the cancel button.

(J) Press this button to close the JAWS search and find dialog.

(N) This information opens in the virtual viewer. I’ll press ESC to exit the virtual viewer and return to the find dialog box.

(N) Now I’ll tab to another control and press INSERT+F1 again.
