(Narrator) Play or Pause in FSReader

If you have FSReader open from the last topic, you’re ready to go. I don’t have it open, so I’ll go ahead and open it now:

To open FSReader, switch to the JAWS window by pressing INSERT+J.

(JAWS) JAWS context menu.

(N) Next, press ALT and the letter H to go to the Help menu. My JAWS is set to start from the system tray, so I’ll just press H by itself.

(J) JAWS: H help sub menu

(N) Find and press ENTER on Training in the Help menu. Again, since mine is running from the system tray I’ll press the letter T.

(J) Training. Leaving menus. FSReader - Table of Contents. JAWS Training Contents heading level one. Table of Contents. Page has 12 headings and 16 links.

(N) FSReader opens to the JAWS Table of Contents. NOTE: If the Table of Contents is not available in your version of FSReader, just press F1 to open the DAISY book built-in help to use as you participate in this practice. Press ALT+SPACEBAR followed by X to maximize FSReader.

(J) Menu. System menu. Restore unavailable. Leaving menus. JAWS Training Contents heading level one.

(N) When using FSReader with narrated audio and training materials, you can play and pause, skip ahead, or skip backward through narrated audio using the keyboard even when focus is not in the FSReader interface. Use these keystrokes to control FSReader audio in the background.

Press CTRL+P to play or pause audio. I’ll do that now.

[Audio narration] “Use this link to open book link 5 Introduction to Microsoft Windows of the JAWS Basic Training.” JAWS: Book 6 using the key...

(N) And I’ve pressed CTRL+P again to pause the audio.

When the audio is playing you can press CTRL+PERIOD when the audio is playing to skip ahead five seconds. I’ll go ahead and press the CTRL+P again to start playing the audio and then press the the period a couple of times to show you what happens.

[Audio narration] “Book 6 using the… the keyboard to read and edit text JAWS commands and… use… to page down and page up keys.”

(N) I can also skip backward by pressing CTRL+COMMA. I’ll play the audio again and press the comma.

[Audio narration] “copying, cutting and pasting text… and keys… proofread and navigate text… the Say Line and Say All JAWS commands and…”

(N) When you are in an application such as Microsoft Word or a web browser and FSReader is running in the background pressing CTRL+P controls the play or pause audio feature rather than accessing the print dialog box. If you need to print, choose print from the application menu.

When continuing on to the next topic in this module you may leave FSReader open with the Table of Contents in view. That is where we’ll pick up again in the next topic.
