(J) ALT+H, Help Menu, Commands Search, INSERT+SPACE, J.

(N) And I will press Z, Zed, for the Startup Wizard.

(J) Z, leaving menus, JAWS Startup Wizard dialog. Help us improve Freedom Scientific products. Would you like to participate in our effort to improve Freedom Scientific products by submitting anonymous usage data? Participate check box, not checked. To check press spacebar, ALT+P.

(N) The first page of the Startup Wizard allows you to choose whether or not to participate in allowing JAWS to send anonymous information on how the software is used to Freedom Scientific. There is also a link with more information about what data is collected. I will press SPACEBAR to select this.

(J) Space, checked.

(N) And I will press ALT+N, November, to activate the Next button.

(J) ALT+N, Speech Settings. Rate, colon, 100, left/right slider, 14%. To increase or decrease use the arrow keys, ALT+R.

(N) The second page lets you adjust some speech settings including how fast JAWS speaks, how much punctuation you hear, and how much JAWS speaks as you type. I am going to increase the voice rate just a little. I will press PGUP.

(J) 24%

(N) You can also increase or decrease the voice rate in smaller increments by using the LEFT and RIGHT ARROW. I will press RIGHT ARROW.

(J) 25%

(N) I will press ALT+N for the Next button.

(J) ALT+N, Run JAWS Settings, If you select "Start JAWS at the logon screen," JAWS will be loaded at the logon screen.

(N) I pressed CTRL to stop speech there. The third page contains options for automatically starting JAWS. These are the same options we looked at in the previous lesson on starting JAWS. I will press ALT+N to go to the Next page.

(J) ALT+N, Common Options. Smart Navigation off, radio button checked, 1 of 3. To change the selection press UP or DOWN ARROW, ALT+S.

(N) The fourth page contains some common options you may want to change such as Forms Mode, the keyboard layout, and more. We will cover some of these options in more detail in later lessons. I will press ALT+N to go to the Next button.

(J) ALT+N, Verbosity Settings. Tutor messages, Announce menu and control help, radio button checked, 2 of 3. To change the selection press up or down arrow, ALT+T.

(N) The fifth page lets you configure verbosity options which control how much information you hear as you navigate applications. For instance, as you become more comfortable with using JAWS and interacting with various application controls and menus, you may want to turn off Tutor messages to cut down on excessive speech. I will press ALT+N activate the Next button.

(J) ALT+N, Braille Translation Settings. Language combo box, English - United States, 15 of 52. To change the selection use the arrow keys, ALT+A.

(N) The sixth page lets you customize how information is sent to a refreshable braille display. You can also choose how text is entered when typing on a braille display’s keyboard. I will press ALT+N to go to the last page of the Startup Wizard.

(J) ALT+N, Braille Settings. Braille Mode combo box, structured, 2 of 3. To change the selection use the arrow keys, ALT+L.

(N) The final page contains more braille settings such as the braille mode, flash messages, word wrap, and more. Many of these settings will be covered in more detail in our lesson on using refreshable braille. For now, I will press ENTER to activate the Finish button.

(N) JAWS has saved the changes I made using the Startup Wizard.
