In JAVA v.1.7, Update 6 and higher, Oracle has included the JAVA Access Bridge components with the JAVA installation for Windows 32 and 64-bit operating systems. However, the Access Bridge components are not enabled by default and should be enabled manually. Assuming you have already downloaded and installed the latest JAVA:
- Press WINDOWS Key+U to open the Windows Ease of Access control panel.
- Choose the Use the computer without a display link.
- Check the Enable JAVA Access Bridge check box.
- Exit out of the Ease of Access Center.
NOTE: some systems may not respond to the Enable Java Access Bridge checkbox. If you find you are having difficulty with JAWS, Fusion, or MAGic accessing JAVA, try the following command line procedure to install and enable JAVA which includes the Access Bridge components:
- Open an elevated command prompt by going to c:\windows\system32 and highlight
CMD.exe.
- Press the Application property key and select Run as administrator.
Answer the UAC with Yes when prompted.
- At the command prompt type "cd c:\Program Files\JAVA" and press
ENTER.
- Type "dir /b" and press ENTER. The installed versions of
JAVA will be listed.
- Type "cd NameOfLatestJAVAListed" for example if your folder is
named "jre1.8.0_144" you would type "cd jre1.8.0_144"
and you will change to the "jre1.8.0_144" folder.
- Type cd "bin" and press ENTER.
- Type "jabswitch /enable" and press ENTER to enable JAVA
accessibility for 64bit.
- Type "cd c:\Program Files (x86)\Java" and press ENTER.
- Again type "dir /b" to list the versions of installed JAVA.
- Type "cd JAVAVersionName" for example "CD jre1.8.0_144"
and press ENTER.
- Type "cd bin" and press ENTER.
- Type "jabswitch /enable" to enable the 32bit java accessibility.
- Type "exit" and press ENTER.
- Exit and restart JAWS.
- Follow steps 1 through 7 above.
- Type "exit" and press ENTER to close the command prompt.
- Exit and restart JAWS.
For 64bit systems:
Note: 64bit systems will need to install both 32bit and 64bit versions of JAVA in order for JAWS to work with JAVA apps.
For 32bit systems:
Applies to: JAWS, ZoomText, Fusion, Optelec, Enhanced Vision and MAGic
